The study of energy of eco-system reflects function and status of the system. Nowadays emergy theory is the newest theory in the study of energy. The study area is Qilian in Baiyinxile pasture. Based on the emergy theory, grazing system in typical steppe is to be evaluated. It is in a position to evaluate status of the area and sustainable development.Based production mode and livestock structure, the households of the study area is partitioned to 7 management patterns. Net emergy yield ratio (EYR), environment load ratio(ELR), emergy investment ratio(EIR), circle ratio of energy flow(CREF), emergy-based sustainability index (ESI) and so on were chose to analyse the 7 management patterns. The main results showed that:(1) Typical manage pattern which based on grazing and mowing is the main pattern. The emergy efficiency of the management pattern which based on the livestock structure of only goats is lower. And the dependence on environment is less than others. The stability is higher. The management pattern which based on complex livestock structure has bigger stress on environment than the management pattern which based on simple livestock structure. But it is more developmental and has more space to develop. (2) The manage pattern which based on renting all of the livestock and pasture has smaller stress on environment. The stability and sustainable development is higher. Though it is lower production efficiency, it has more space to develop.(3) The manage pattern which based on renting all of the livestock and selling pasture is less emergy input and inorganic energy is not exist, so that it has the smallest stress on environment, the system is stable and the emergy efficiency is the highest of all. But the development level is low and the dependence on environment is the most of all. The manage pattern which based on renting a part of the livestock has bigger stress on environment. The stability and sustainable development is lower. But the development level is higher. It will advance the system by combining different management pattern than by only one management pattern.(4) We shuld increase the renewable organic energy and the diversity of livestock structure and put scientific management into the system. Expanding the scale of management and multi-management pattern should be appeared. We can make the best of local resource and avoid the waste of resource by multi-industry.
