A comparative study of rotational and continuous grazing systems was conducted on family ranches in typical steppe. Plant population, community, soil and animal were disscussed. The results showed as follow:Plant height, density and coverage of Stipa grandis in the continuous grazing area were higher than that in the rotational grazing area, plant height, density and coverage of Leymus chinensis were lower than that in the rotational grazing area and check plotï¼›Potentilla acaulis had the trend of creeper and shorten in the continuous grazing area, density and coverage higher than that in the rotational grazing area and check plot. The main plant plant population important values were difference among the three treatments. Compared with continuous grazing, Potentilla acaulis important value in the rotational grazing and check plot lied in behind. The richness index, evenness index and diversity index were all found higher in the rotational grazing and check plot than in the continuous grazing area. The standing crop of community and Leymus chinensis in the rotational grazing area were higher than that in the continuous grazing area, the peak time of stand crop in two grazing systems which compared with check plot were lagged. Eqaul compensaition growth of community was found in the two grazing systems during the whole growing period, but potential of the compensaition in the rotational grazing area was higher. The main plant population had different compensation in the two grazing systems. Compared with the continuous grazing, contents of crude protein, crude fat and calcium were higher and the contents of crude fiber was lower in the rotational grazing area. The seed quantity was higher in soil seed bank of the rotational grazing area than that in continuous grazing . The seed setting percentage of Leymus chinensis and Agropyron cristatum increased, while the seed setting percentage of Stipa grandis and Achnatherum sibiricum decreased in the rotational grazing area. Stipa grandis becomed fragmentation and tussock density increased. The distance of Potentilla acaulis vegetative roots were shorten in the continuous grazing area.In the rotational grazing the surface soil hardness and bulk density were decreased ,soil moisture and porosity were increased ,soil nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter were high . Lower fluctuation in animal body weight was obtained in rotational grazing than that in continuous grazing. Animal production was stable.
