Damages to ecological environment caused by soil erosion have drawn the attention of people of all circles for a long time. Ecological Restoration of red soil degradation is a research focus .Taking the deteriorated red loam in small watershed of Zhuxi River in Changting County as a typical case, this study surveys the terrain factors, land use, vegetation forms, soil types and improvement measures in small watershed at of Zhuxi River by using GIS (Geographical Information System) and RS (Remote Sensing). It furthers surveys the cause and effect of soil erosion in small watershed and tries to grasp the evolutionary law of soil erosion under the condition of different terrain factors, vegetation and soil, and improvement measures. On the basis of analyzing the laws of time and space changes and the influencing factors of the soil erosion in the process of improving the red loam small watershed, it seeks to solve the problem of water loss and soil erosion in the whole management process by putting in place its improvement paradigms, and at the same time validate the applicability of the various improvement measures and paradigms on the issue of soil erosion in that area and its feasibility in technology, aiming at providing scientific bases for the conservation of water and soil in the red soil area. The followings are what the results indicate: (i) No obvious increases in erosion areas occur from 1999 to 2007. On the contrary, the erosion areas are decreasing gradually, with no obvious increases. The soil erosion in small watershed of Zhuxi River has remarkably decreased in grade (mainly one grade). On the term of terrain factor, Soil and water loss was concentrated in the elevation 300m-450m, and slope gradient from 8-15,large distribution range and severe loss of sunny slope . (ii) Based on the study of the dynamic laws of soil erosion, put forward a series of suitable paradigms, such as recycling economy, agro-forestry compound management, the undergrowth protection, the slump gully improvement and so on, to preserve the ecological environment and improve eco-safety (III) By making use of the ecological footprint model, the sustainable development and eco-safety conditions of the deteriorated red loam are further surveyed.
