In order to reveal the initiation mechanism of abortion in male inflorescence of chestnut, the morphological characteristic, the growth dynamics, the anatomical characteristics, and endogenous hormones contents of male inflorescences and some protective enzymes activities and MDA content in leaves in the male abortion process in the male cluster sterile cultivars (strain) were systematically studied compared with that in the fertile cultivars (strains)-Yansheng and Yanlong, All trees used in this study were 3-year-old plant. And the growth of shoots and leaves in these trees were also investigated. The results were discussed as follows:1. A new simple, accurate and no-destructive method of measuring catkin length of chestnut was introduced to determine the length of catkin on living plants or detached ones in the field and laboratory. The t-test (t=0.033
