Objectives. To compare the antihypertensive effect and safety of the angiotensin II receptor antagonists Jrbesatan and Valsartan The efficacy and tolerability of Lrbesartan was evaluatedMethods:fifty-three patients with mild-to- moderate hypertension were randomized to two groups in double-blind manner One group was treated with Jrbesartan 75-l5Omglday(group A), the other group with Valsartan 80-l6Omglday(group B), for 4 weeks Sitting blood pressure, heart rate and laboratory examination of the patients were observed at baseline and post-treatment Adverse reactions were recorded4Results: Diastolic blood pressure was reduced in the Irbesartan group by 13 3±8.7 nimHg and in Valsartan group by 165±93mniHg. Efficacy was achieved m 760% of patients in group A and 84.0% in group B (P>O.05). The blood pressure was controlled at starting dose in 72.0% for patients in group A and 68.0% in group B (P>0.05) Adverse reactions were infrequent in both groups. Conclusions: Irbesartan was effective, safe, reliable and welltolerated in the treatment of mild-to-moderate essential hypertension.
