Objective To investigate the characteristics and differences between old and young patients with gastric cancer in clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment.Methods The clinical data of old group (80 cases,≥60 years) with gastric cancer treated in second affiliated hospital from 1990 to 2000 were reviewed and contrasted with young group(82 cases,<60 years)during the same period.Results ①Clinical manifestations: There were more cases with emaciation, flatulence and dysphagia as the mayor symptom in the old group than the contrasted group; ② Course of diseases : Incidence rate of disease course lasting for 3mon ~ 6mon was higher in old group than young group, but incidence rate of disease course lasting shorter than 3mon was lower than young group; ③ Tumor position: Incidence rate of cardiac cancer was higher in old group than young group, but incidence rate of gastric antrum cancer was lower in old group than young group; ④ Tumor size: The Discovery rate oftumor (focus≤ 2.5 cm) was higher in old group than young group, but the discovery rate of tumor (focus 2.5 cm~5 cm) was lower in old group than young group; ⑤ Tumor types: In both groups, adenocarcinoma was major type, while incidence rate of high and middle differentiated adenocarcinoma was high in old group, there were more cases with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in young group. ⑥ Electron endoscopy and gastrointestinal radiography(GI): Endoscopy diagnostic rate in old group was higher than that in young group, remaining results had no significant difference; ⑦ Treatment: There was no significant difference between radical resection rate and resection rate in two groups.Conclusions Old group with gastric cancer differ from young group in clinical manifestations, disease course, tumor position, size, pathological histology types and other aspects.
