To determine whether insulin - like growth factor receptor - I (IGF - IR) and epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) immunos-taining of tumor cells is associated with the grading and pathological staging of transitional cell carcinoma of bladder.Patients and MethodsThe patients were chosen randomly from the hospital records of those treated with cystectomy for urothelial cancer of the urinary bladder between 2000 and 2002 . The paraffin - embedded specimens obtained after surgery from 63 patients were processed for immunohisto-chemical staining, using the monoclonal antibody for IGF - IR and EGFR . IGF - IR (or EGFR ) immunostaining was considered positive if the membrane staining was stronger than the control group and at least as strong as the standard sample specimen .ResultsThe positive immunostained specimen of IGF - IR and EGFR was37 (58.7%) and 33 (52. 4%) repectively in experiment group. There was only 1(8. 3% ) specimen positive in control group. So we can draw the conclusion that the expression of IGF - IR and EGFR in TCC is stronger than in normal, bladder mucous membrane ( P < 0. 05). But there is no statistic significance between IGF - IR and EGFR In UICC staging, there is no statistic significance of immunostain-ing level in EGFR between Tis ~ T1 and T2 ~ T4. But in IGF - IR, the immunostaining level of T2 ~ T4 is higher than that of Tis ~ T1. However high grading tumor cell shows a tendency of showing high level of positive rate of immunostaining . In G3 , the postive rate of immunostaining of IGF - IR and EGFR was higher than G2 and G1, But there is no statistic significance between G, and G2.ConclusionSo we can draw the conclusion that IGF - IR plays a role almost as important as EGFR in transitional cell carcinoma of human bladder . Both of them have relations with the grading and staging of TCC.
