As a common Chinese herbs, Cortex Magnolia Officinalis is the dried bark, root bark and branch bark of Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. or Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. var. biloba Rehd. et Wils.( Fam. Magnoliaceae ), which can eliminate damp and relieve distension, and often be used to treat accumulation of damp in the spleen and the stomach marked by epigastric stuffiness, vomiting and diarrhea, stagnation of qi due to retention of undigested food manifested by abdominal distension and constipation, cough and dyspnea caused by retained fluid. vCortex Magnolia Officinalis is always collected by cutting down the trees and striping the bark, therefore, there is great conflict between clinical utilization and environmental protection. The clinical record of the leaf of Magnolia' Officinalis couldn't be found through textual research . Since Magnolia officinalis is a kind of deciduous trees with large leaf, and the leaf give high yield every year, exploiting the resources of Magnolia officinalis can harmonize clinical utilization with environmental protection. To provide scientific basis for clinical using, the systemic morphological, histological, chemical and pharmacological study on leaf of Magnolia officinalis have been performed for the first time. The result showed that Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils., Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. var. biloba Rehd. et Wils.( Fam. Magnoliaceae )and intermediate type between these two subspecies could be identified through characteristic and microscopic character, especially the shape of the leaf and the non-glandulars . The leaf of Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. contained phenolic component, alkaloid, volatile oil and flavonoid, and the major component of the volatile oil in Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. was Caryophyllene oxide .The contents of magnolol and honokiol of Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. were analyzed by the method of HPLC, and the dynamic changes of the content were investigated, the result showed that the content of bioactive component in the leaf which is collected during the last ten-day of October was the highest. The leaf and the bark of Magnolia officinalis Rehd. et Wils. played similar influence on the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract of mice, especially the dual-directional regulation on the gastrointestinal tract of mice.
