Objective To study the effect of activating the blood and precluding tumescence methods on preventing postlaminectomy fibrosis. Methods 45 adult rabbits were established as the experimental models undergoing L5 laminectomy, with 12mm×5mm dura mater exposed. All laminectomy levels were randomly divided into three groups: Group A (treated with no medicine), Group B (treated with indomethacin for four weeks), and Group C (with herb medicine for four weeks). At the 3th , 5th and 8th weeks, the samples were obtained for gross observation, histological examinations, and analysed by computer. The contents of hydroxyprdine were detected. Results At the 3th week after laminectomy, the gross and histological examinations in Group A were markedly higher than those in Group B and Group C (p<0.05) , the contents of hydroxyprdine and the results conculated by computer of Group A were remarkablely different than those of Group C ( p<0.05).At the 5th week after laminectomy, all the indexes of Group A were significantly higher than those of Group B and Group C(p<0.05).At the 8th week after laminectomy, there were remarkable differences between the three groups. Conclusions The drugs of activating blood and precluding tumescence could reduce scar formation, loosen fibroscar and inhibit the formation of collagen. It may promote the degradating reaction of hematoma, accelerate the remove of inflammatory cells and prevent the migration of fibroblast cells. The method of activating the blood and precluding tumescence is effective in preventing postlaminectomy fibrosis.
