Invasion and metastasis are two important characters of malignant tumor, in two process, hypoxia inducible factor- 1α (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) play an important role. Purpose: To evaluate expression of HIF-1α and VEGF in prostate cancer, and study relationship between HIF-1α and VEGF, their expression and the pathological grade, clinical stage in prostate cancer. Methods: HIF-1α and VEGF were detected by immunohistochemistry method in tissues of 40 cases of prostatecancer and 10 cases of BPH. Results: HIF-1α and VEGF levels in prostate cancer were much higher than those in BPH; the degree of cancer malignant positively correlated with the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF; the degree of cancer invasion positively correlated with the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF; HIF-1α level positively correlated with VEGF level, but HIF-1α expression wasn't in accordance with VEGF expression. Conclusion: HIF-1α and VEGF are good molecular markers of prostate cancer which can be used to assist diagnosis and predict prognosis; HIF-1α is one of important regulator of VEGF.
