Objective:To investigate the association between HLA-DQA1 gene and type 2 diabetes mellitus in Yi nationality of Yunnan. Methods: Genotypes of HLA-DQA1 alleles were conducted by Polyraerase chain reaction-sequence specific primers(PCR-SSP) in 58 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus of Yi nationality and 82 ethnically matched controls from Yunnan, Then made a study on the correltion between the polymorphism of HLA-DQA1 alleles and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results:The frenquency of HLA-DQA1*0301 allele in the patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus of Yi nationality was significantly higer (p =0.002, relative risk=3.097) than that in the the group of heathy control, and the frenquency of HLA~DQAl*0601 was significantly lower(p=0. 025, relative risk=0. 429) in the patients. Conclusion:The result suggests that an abnormimal distrbution of HLA-DQA1 alleles is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus of Yi nationality. HLA-DQAl*0301 allele maybe a susceptible gene and the HLA-DQAl*0601 allele might protect individuals from development of diabetes mellitus. It was previously reported that HLA-DQA*0301 gene is an important risk factor for type 1 diabetes mellitus. This increase in risk is consistent with a shared genetic susceptibility between type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
