Objective: To investigate the relationship between the expression of E-cadherin-catenin complex and their biological behavior in gastric carcinoma. Methods: 58 specimens with gastric carcinoma after operation were confirmed by pathology in our hospital. High and mediate differentiated carcinoma was 36 cases, low differentiated carcinoma was 22 cases. Invasion to musosa, submucosa and myometrium was 36 cases, Invasion to placenta percreta was 22 cases. 26 specimens with lymph node metastasis, 28 specimens without lymph node metastasis and 4 specimens not to be confirmed. Specimens were cut continuously by the ice cutter with 4 m. Every cases was controlled by HE dyeing slide. Immunohistochemical method was used with S-P method. Results: Reduced expression of E-cadherin , -catenin and P-catenin were respectively observed in 55.2% cases, 63.8% and 50.0% and found significantly correlated with histologic grade. Positive and negative expression by E-cadherin and a-catenin at the same time was 87.9%, there was a obvious correlation. In addition, abnormal P-catenin expression was significantly correlated either with depth of invasion or metastasis. Conclusion: Abnomal expression of E-cadherin-catenin complex occurs frequently in gastric carcinomas. E-cadherin and a-catenin can be detect at the same time for clinical diagnosis. The expression of E-cadherin, a-catenin and P-catenin are correlated with histologic grade, while P-catenin is useful marker that evaluate the depth of invasion and metastasis in gastric carcinoma.
