Pesticide residue and heavy metal contamination, which are important factors that affect the safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine, have become an obstacle to the modernization of Traditional Chinese Midicine (TCM) .The establishment of the detection methods of pesticide residue and heavy metal content in TCM and the evaluation of their safety are becoming an important research domain.Pogostemon cablin Benth, Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb, Myristica fragrans Houtt and Piper nigrum L.are local herbs of Hainan. The research aimed to study the fundamental value of pesticide residue and heavy metal content of the four kinds of southern herbs in Hainan Island. In the paper, the detection methods of pesticide residue and heavy metal content of the four kinds of southern herbs are established by Graphite Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Gas Chromatography ( GC ) and Atomic Fluorimetry. The fundamental value of pesticide residue and heavy metal content of the four kinds of southern herbs is determined in the end. Pesticide residue and heavy metal content of the herbs in the different region of Hainan are compared and the varation is evident. The result of the detection of 10 kinds of organochlorine pesticide residue indicates that linearity correlation coefficient is 0.9938-0.9999, precision less than 3.0%, recovery 83.1%~ 109.2%; the result of the detection of 5 kinds of heavy metal indicates that linearity correlation coefficient is 0.9968-0.9998, recovery 92.0%~98.7%; the content of666, DDT, quintozene.drinox Pogostemon cablin Benth is 0.024,0.082,0.001,0.005ug/g; Piper nigrum L 0.003 , 0.007,0.0001,0.002ug/g; Myristica fragrans Houtt 0.009,0.014,0.008,0.005ng/g; Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb 0.017, 0.142, 0.028, O.OOlug/go The content of Cu, Pb, Cd, As, Hg of Pogostemon cablin Benth is 33.9, 5.61,0.198,0.62,0.079ng/g; Piper nigrum L 25.08, 1.16, 0.031, 0.094, 0.026ug/g; Myristica fragrans Houtt 8.66, 1.16, 0.102,0.12, 0.018[ig/g; Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb 3.72, 1.10, 0.038, 0.160, 0.015ng/goCompared with the relevant Green Standard of the State, the pesticide residue content of the three kinds of southern herbs accord with the Green Standard, but DDT of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb is higher than the Standard. The content of Cu -, Pb in Pogostemon cablin Benth is higher than the Standard, so is the content of. Cu in Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb , and Myristica fragrans Houtt and Piper nigrum L on heavy metal content accord with the Standard.
