Objective: to study the relationship between the syndrome differentiation of TCM and heart rate variability in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and stable angina pectoris (AP). Methods: 37 patients with CHD were divided into two groups according to the syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM): deficiency of vital energy group (18 cases) and deficiency of both vital energy and yin group (19 cases), and 15 healthy persons who accepted medical examination were divided into control group. Every case was examined with 24-hour holter monitoring electrocardiogram and the changes of heart rate variability (HRV) were contrasted among three groups. Results: the levels of HRV in both deficiency of vital energy group and deficiency of both vital energy and yin group were lower than those in control group, and the levels of HRV in deficiency of both vital energy and yin group were lower than those in deficiency of vital energy group. Conclusion: the patients with CHD with AP of deficiency of both vital energy and yin have more severe impaired cardiac autonomic control than the patients with CHD with AP of deficiency of vital energy. Syndrome differentiation of TCM has a relationship to HRV and can be used to reflect the progress of disease in patients with CHD with AP.
