Background and Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of expression of PAI-1, C-erbB-2, VEGF and Ki-67 in the patients with node-negative breast cancer. We expected to find the significant factors and thereby to identify the patients who were at low- or high-risk and direct adjuvent therapy. Methods: Medical records of 62 breast cancer patients who had been operated were retrospectively reviewed. PAI-1, C-erbB-2, VEGF and Ki-67 expression were studied by immunohistochemical technique. With Several clinical and pathological characteristics of patients, they were evaluated prognostically. Results: Univariate analysis showed that the prognostic factors influencing 5-year disease-free survival were tumor size, tumor location, age, PAI-1, Ki-67 and VEGF. Multivariate analysis demonstrated PAI-1 was the only independent prognostic factor determining 5-year disease-free survival. Conclusions: It was suggested that tumor size, tumor location, age, PAI-1, VEGF and Ki-67 were all of prognostic significance in node-negative breast cancer patients. And PAI-1 was the only meaningful factor to predict the recurrence and metastasis of node-negative breast cancer patients. With PAI-1 intermediate or high expression, patients were candidates for active adjuvant therapy.
