Abstract Through observing the expression of synaptophysin and GAP-43 in rat hippocampus ,to investigate the effects of long-term Alcohol consumption and CoQ10 .Methods 60 male Wistar rats were divided into 3 random groups : 12 for normal control (N), 24 rats were orally exposed to high dosage of alcohol (HA, 6mg/kg/d), Low dosage of alcohol was given to the other 24 rats (LA, 2mg/kg/d). 5 weeks later, HA was randomized into HA1(continue with alcohol) and HA2(alcohol and CoQ10), so as LA.After all 10 weeks, a quantitative evaluation of synaptophysin and GAP-43 was performed in hippocampus by using immunohistochemical method and the results were processed by computer image analysis system. Results The immumoreactive intensity of synaptophysin declined in hippocampus of LA1 and the HA1 ,which had significant difference compared with the control group(p<0.01).There were obvious difference between LA1 and HA1(p<0.05).The difference was also notable between LA1 and LA2(p<0.05).The immunoreactivities of GAP-43 in hippocampus of LA2 was stronger than the control group and LA1(p<0.05).Conclusion Long-term alcohol consumption lead to the decrease of synaptophysin and the decrease-degree is related with the quantity of alcohol consumption.CoQ10 presumably have a curative action on the central nerve system damage induced by long-term Low-dosage-alcohol consumption.
