With the development of age. the alcohol consumption has been rushed in recent years. It is reported that the incidence rate of hepatic injury induced by alcohol (ALD) is higher than that of some other hepatic disease and to which more attention are paid spontaneously.Codonopsis lanceolata (CL) is a kind of medical herbal roots ( now used as a kind of food), which is composed of many kinds of nutrient substances. In order to study the protective effect of CL on alcoholic hepatic injury, we have designed this series of trails.Firstly, we have adopted the screening trail to screen the effective components in CL on alcoholic model with male mice. We used the ethanol extract of CL (EACL). the supernatant of water extract ethanol sediment of CL (SIVCL) and the water extract ethanol sediments of CL (ESCL). The result was that the ESCL can inhibit the decreasing of GSH content in liver induced by alcohol (P<0.05), and other components have lower effects. So we selected the ESCL as the subject to study the protective effect on alcohol hepatic injury. Secondly, the result of the anti-free radical in vitro trail with S9 showed that ESCL has the better anti-radical effect compared with that without S9. Thirdly, in the anti-oxidant animal model in vivo study, MDA TG, GSH are regarded as the sensitive indicators about ALD. and GSH-Px is not only correlation with GSH. but also reflect the metabolizability of antioxidants. The result indicated that the ESCL can inhibit the increasing of MDA content and TG induced by alcohol (P<0.05), and upregulate the activity of GSH-Px (P<0.05). Fourthly. In order to discussing themechanisms of ESCL against the alcoholic hepatic injury, we selected the activity of GSH-Px enzyme and MDA content of mitochondria and plasma in mice liver. We adopted the four times which is two weeks, four weeks, six weeks and eight weeks to detect them. The result showed that ESCL can upregulate GSH-Px activity and decrease MDA content in mitochondria and plasma of liver cells. It proved that ESCL has the preventive effects on the generation of excessive lipid peroxidation in liver mitochondria and supernatent (P<0.05).In addition, it is significant to detect the some elements contents such as Cu. Zn, Ca. Mg, which join in the bod}' antioxidation. This study results were that the contents of Zn, Mg, Ca in liver and bone in alcohol group has decreased in different degree compared with control and ESCL groups (P<0.05). This indicants that ESCL has some effects on the loss of elements in liver as well as the inhibition of the LPO generation, and helps to restrain osteoporosis induced by alcohol at the same time.
