Objective: To assess the changes of the growth hormone and insulin like growth factor system before and after long-term inhaled corticosteroids in children with asthma and to observe the variation of height between sick children and healthy children with same age and same gender before and after 24 months therapy respectively. Methods : The height was measured and recorded by standard method; the contents of GH was measured by radio immunoassay(RIA). The serum IGF- I and IGFBP3 level were measured by ELISA. All calculation were performed with SPSS10.0.Results: l.The contents of GH: The serum GH levels in the children who were diagnosed with asthma had no significant difference before and after 6 months, 12 months 24 months therapy(F=0.708,P>0.05). 2. IGF-1 levels in serum: The serum IGF- I levels in the children who were diagnosed with asthma had no significant difference before and after 6 months,12 months,24 months therapy (F=2.735,P>0,05). 3. IGFBP3 levels in serum: The contents of serum IGFBP3 in the children who were diagnosed with asthma had no significant difference before and after 6 months, 12 months,24 months therapy(F=0.599,P>0.05). 4. The comparisons of the changes of height between test group and matching healthy children with same age and same gender pursued by 24 months: The height of the children in test group and control group had no significant difference before therapy (t=1.022,P>0.05) and after 24 months therapy (t=0.612,P>0.05).Conclusion: Our research displayed mat the serum concentrations of GH, IGF- I and IGFBP3 in children suffered from asthma had no obvious change before and after 24 months long-term inhaled corticosteroids. The changes height before and after therapy had no significant difference between sick children and healthy children with same age and same gender. The study indicated that long-term inhaled corticosteroids had no obvious effect on the growth of asthmatic children. Clinician can adopt long-term inhaled corticosteroids to therapy childhood asthma according to GINA plan/scheme.
