The Clinical Research Of A Novel Balloon Brachytherapy Applicator Filled With Iodine-125 For Gliomas

The humans' brain gliomas is nervous tissue tumors,in particular, about 50% of brain tumors are astrocytomas.For high-grade gliomas,if not treatment,they have only half a year from finding clinical symptoms to ending.At present,effective methedology is surgery combine radiation therapy,chomotherapy, molecular biology therapy and gene therapy, but clinical effect are not ideal.Therefore the treatment of gliomas require new methedology.This subject is a deeply study to the new technology of balloon brachytherapy.From April of 2003 to December of 2003,5 patients were treated with the balloon brachytherapy filled with Iodine-125.Total irradiation of 60-80 gy was administered about 5-8 day. Over two year survival in 4 cases ,No acute or chronic radiation side effect was observed in the follow-up.The balloon brachytherapy filled with iodine-125 can improve the quality of life and extend the time of life evidently.This is the effective method for the treatment of the gliomas.
