Objective To study the expression of dendritic cells(DCS) and proliferating Cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and their clinical significance in esophageal squamous carcinoma(ESC).Methods The expression of dendritic cells and proliferating cell nuclear antigen was detected immunohistochemistrically by SP methods in 80 cases of esophageal squamous carcinoma(ESC).Results 1. S-100 DCs was mainly expressed in the Carcinoma cells groups and occassionally in interstitium. DCs was expressed positively in the way of S-100 protein, with nucleus and plasmas being yellow-stained. DCs was irregularly shaped and presented with dendritic protuberance. DCS were distributed locally in the interstitium and usually went along with lymphocytes to form cell clusters(diagram 2. 1). Dendritic part of DCs made contact tightly with adjacent carcinoma cells and surrounded them in the carcinoma focus(diagram 2.2). The range of DCs infiltration was 036/HPF, with average being 9.47 ± 7.21/HPF. 13.75% (11/80) of cases showed no infiltration. The intensity of DCs infiltration showed no correlation with sex1, age2, porsition3 and size4 (t1=0. 1764, P1=0. 8605; t2=1. 2561, P2=0. 2128; F3=0. 1997, P3= 0.8194; F4=0. 5774, P4=0. 4508) . But the differentiation among pathohistological grading5 shows high significance (F5=14.7921 , P5 < 0. 00001) (diagram 2.3, 2.4). The same is with lymph node metastasis6 and clinical stage7(t'6=2. 7864, P6=0. 0076; F7=6. 9597, P7=0. 0003) (diagram 2. 5, 2.6) . The intensity of DCs infiltration showed positive correlation with that of differentiation and negative with that of lymph node metastasis and clinical stages. 2.
