Objective: To evaluate the curative effects and safety of Arixtra in preventing deep venous thrombosis (DVT) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA).Methods: From March 2004 to December 2004, we performed to THA and TKA for 80 patients (52 hips, 28 knees) and distributed in 2 groups randomly. The experiment group had been given Arixtra for preventing deep venous thrombosis and the control group had been given Enoxaparin. All patients were received color Doppler ultrasonography for bilateral lower extremities after operation to detect DVT.Results: DVT occurred in 7.5% of the Arixtra patients and 15% of the Enoxaparin 3 patients and the variability was significant (P<0.05). The incidence of DVT of 52 patients for THA was 9.6% and 14.2% for TKA and the variability was significant (P<0.05). All patients hadn't occurred fatal events and other severe events. Conclusion: The curative effects of Arixtra in preventing DVT after THA and TKA were better than that of Enoxaparin. The safety of Arixtra in preventing DVT was equal to that of Enoxaparin. The incidence of DVT for TKA was higher than that for TKA.
