Using fresh herbs to prevent and treat diseases is one of the important features of traditional Chinese medicine. It has long history in China. Houttuynia is the overground dried of Houttuynia cordata of saururaceae plant. The main active components of Houttuynia include essential oils and flavonoids. This study analyzed different places , different harvest time and medicinal parts of fresh and dried Houttuynia. The content of its main effective components: methyl-n-nonylketone, decanoyl acetaldehyde, total flavonoid , quercetin of fresh and dried herbs were compared. The study also compared the pharmacology effects of the different extractions of fresh and dried Houttuynia which extracted by water and alcohol. The content of methyl-n-nonylketone and decanoyl acetaldehyde in Houttuynia were measured by GC-MS. And total flavonoid is measured by ultraviolet spectro-photometry, quercetin is measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography. After investigated these methods, the study indicated that they were accurate, simple, good at controlling the quality of Houttuynia. The study researched the pharmacology effects of anti-inflammatory, resolving phlegm and antibiotic in vivo of Houttuynia. The results showed that the contents of its effective components infresh herbs were higher than those in the dried ones. Sampling places, times and medicinal parts also affected the content quantities.Among thethree areas: Ya'an, Emei, Sichuan and Guangdong, samples collectedfrom Yaan, Sichuan appeared to have the highest contents of activecomponents. Among all sampling areas, the contents of total flavonoidand quercetin in leaf were higher than those in root, stem and herbs. Butthe content of methyl-n-nonylketone and decanoyl acetaldehyde in leaf isalmost in root. They were both higher than the other medicinal parts; Thecontents of total flavonoid and quercetin seemed to increase during Julyto October. The contents of methyl-n-nonylketone, and decanoylacetaldehyde did not change clearly in Yaan and Guangdong. They didnot change clearly in Emei during July to September. But to October theywere declined clearly. The results of pharmacology experiment showedthat the extractions of fresh and dried Houttuynia which extracted bywater and alcohol all have effects of anti-inflammatory and resolvingphlegm. The fresh have better effects than the dried ones. And theextractions by water have better effects than the extractions by alcohol. The extractions of fresh and dried Houttuynia which extracted by waterhave inhibitory effects to staphylococcus aureus and eschenchia coli. Butthe extraction by alcohol of dried Houttuynia has no obvious effects. The purpose of this study is to compare the chemical compositions and the pharmic effects of fresh and dried Houttuynia. Accumulation and dynamic investigations for the effective components of Houttuynia during different periods of growth. It can provide the basis for rational exploitation and application in Houttuynia. Further more, the study also...
