Background The occurrence and progression of carcinoma is dertermined by epithelial-mesenchymal interactions in the microenviroment of tumor-host interface. .One of the most important host cells in that microenviroment is carcinoma-associated fibroblasts (CAFs),which would affect the biological behavior of epithelial cells remarkably due to their significant changes of secretory characteristics .As the most specific production of CAFs, fibroblast activation protein (FAP) exerts important roles in the invasion ,metastasis, and reverse of tumors.and has become attractive stromal target for the study of diagnosis, prognostic judgement and prevention and cure of tumors. However , no related papers about the role of FAP in OSCC were reported. Purpose to study the expressions of FAP in different pathological grades of OSCC and relationship between them. Methods (1)34 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma and 20 cases of controls(including 5cases normal oral mucosa, 9cases oral leukoplakia,6cases oral lichen planus) were freshly collected, and then be made to freezing slides. The immunohistochemistry (SP) was used to detect the expression of FAP. (2)The immunohistochemistry (SP) was used to detect the expression of vimentin in all the cases, in order to confirm the cells' style of FAP positivestained. Results ?The mean percentage of positive cases of FAP in OSCC groupwas 58.89%, the score of FAP staining had a positive correlation with thepathological classification of OSCC, no FAP expression were found in nearlyall the control cases.?The FAP positive cells also showed positive forvimentin and verfied as CAFs.Conclusion the level of FAP expression could be used as one of the indexsof OSCC in its supplementary diagnosis and severity judgement. The resultsmay also lay foundations for the further studies on the OSCC prognosticassessment and stromal target for therapy.
