Objective: To evaluate the correlation between Survivin expression in gastric cancer and pathological characters and evaluate the role of Survivin in prognosis of patients with gastric cancer.Metheds : 87 patients from June 2002 to August 2002 were enrolled in this trial and the patients were followed up until December 2004 (2 patients were consered) . Median following up time was 20 months. Survivin expression in the gastric cancer tissues were investigated by immunohistochemistry in 87 cases. The correlation between Survivin expression in the maligant tissue and the patients' pathological characters and survival was evaluated. Results: The positive rate of Survivin expression was 37.65% (32/85 ) in this group. Survivin expression didn't correlate with the patients' pathological characters, such as differentiation lymph node depth of invasion and stage (p>0.05 ) . Survivin expression in older patients (≥60 years) was higher than younger patients (<60 years) . But it wasn't significant (p=0.056) .The expression of Survivin did not correlate with survival instage I and stage II cases. But in stage III cases, the 2-year cumulative survival of patients with Survivin negative expression is longer than the positive patients (69.57% vs 23.21%, p=0.0119) .Conclusion: Survivin expression in the gastric cancer wasn't correlative with pathological characters . It was an adverse prognosis factor in stage III cases. Overexpression of Survivin may be an early molecular event in the transformation from normal gastric mucosa cell to malignant cell.
