Objective This study aims to investigate the relationship between the Gln27Glu(79C/G) polymorphism of β2-AR gene and essential hypertension in Kazaks of Xinjiang and to explore the pathogenisis of predispose to hypertension in Kazaks at molecular research level. Methods We recruited 600 Kazak subjects (including 373 hypertensives and 227 normotensives at age of 30-60 years old) from the pastoral areas in Xinjiang by a population-based case-control study method. Samples of peripheral blood were collected from all recruited subjects. The DNA was extracted by means of a standard phenol-chloroform method. β2-AR genetype was identified by analyzing polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism for all subjects. Frequencies of genotype distribution between hypertensives and normotensives were examined. Results Within the total observers, distribution frequencies of the genetype Gln/Gln Gln/Glu Glu/Glu were 52. 00%, 42. 00%, 6. 00% respectively, the allelic frequencies coincide with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P=0. 109). In the group of essential hypertensives, three genotype frequencies were 50. 67%, 43. 70%, 5. 63% respectively, while they were 54.19%, 39.21%, 6.60% in the group of normotensives. In the meanwhile, the allelic frequencies of C, G were 72.52%,27. 48% and 73.79%,26.21% in these two groups. No significant differences were found in genotype frequencies and allelic frequencies of two groups by the statistical analysis(P>0.05).In addition, age, body mass index, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure had no significant differences in the groups classified according to genotypes (P>0.05) . Conclusion No correlation was found between Gln27Glu polymorphism of β2-AR gene and essential hypertension, which implies that it may not play a major role in thepathogefiesis of hypertension in Kazaks of Xinjiang.
