OBJECTIVEOsteoporosis (OP) was a general, systemic disease with the reduction of bone mass, and a common and a multiple disease for the elder. OP led to the increase of fracture by reducing the bone mass and destroying the microstructure. In recent years there were lots of studies for the effects of osteoporosis for the long bone fracture and defect, while the study for the maxillofacial bone was less, so this study was to evaluate the effects of osteoporosis for the mandibular bone defect healing in three aspects as follows: the biochemical indexes, the histomorphometry of callus and the expression of TGF-β1 during healing.METHODSThe total 80 female Wistar rats were divided randomly into 3 groups: group S: sham operation + mandibular bone defect, 26); group O: OVX (ovariectomy) + mandibular bone defect, 27); group E: OVX + mandibular bone defect + estrogen, the rats of group E were given nilestriol after the left mandibular bone defect operation as the estrogen replacement therapy, 1.5mg/kgbw, 2 times/week. Firstly, the osteoporotic model was made through ovariectomy, and it was confirmed 8 weeks after the ovariectomy, then the left mandibular bone defect model was made through ostectomy. The serum biochemical indexes were detected before the ostectomy and in the 1, 2, 3, 4 week postoperation. The rats in each group were sacrificed in 1, 2, 3, 4 week after operation and the ostectomized mandible was dissected to make the decalcified sections. The sections were stained with haematoxylin and erosin and Masson. The expression of TGF-β1 was detected by an immunohistochemical technique. The results of Masson staining and the expression...
