Background and objective:Diabetes mellitus includes a group of metabolic diseases characterized by increased blood glucose levels caused by impaired insulin secretion and/or action, leading to chronic tissue damage and dysfunction of different organs. On the other hand, type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is characterized by progressive decline of pancreaticβcell insulin secretion, usually because of peripheral insulin resistance causing increased insulin demands. Current treatments for T2DM are proving to be inadequate to combat the rising prevalence of these metabolic diseases. At present, there isn't an effective method to cure T2DM. Understanding the genetic basis of these traits currently represents one of the most promising treatment strategies. Unraveling the genetic causes of T2DM will lead to the identification of new therapeutic targets likely to impact the way we treat the disabling or life-threatening complications of the disease. To determine whether lipoprotein lipase gene variants are relevant to ongoing T2DM, we explored the relationships between two common lipoprotein lipase gene polymorphic markers, HindIII at intron 8 and PvuII at intron 6; the lipid variables and insulin resistance (IR) in 78 T2DM patients and 49 controls respectively.Methods:PCR-RFLP method was used to determine the DNA polymorphism of 8th intron and 6th intron at LPL gene in 78 T2DM patients and 49 controls.Results:(1) The frequencies of H+H+, (H+H-+H-H-) genotypes in case and control groups were 0.69 vs 0.24 and 0.31 vs 0.76. For alleles"H+"...
