Selectin is a family of cell adhesion molecules.It includes three structure-like molecules which are E-, P- and L-selectin. They are expressed as adhesion molecular on cell surface of activated endothelium, platelets and white blood cells, respectively. Selectin belongs to I-type transmembrane glycoprotein. It is made up of five domains, from N-terminal to C-terminal, which are calium dependent lectin domain also called carbohydrate recognition domain, epidermal growth factor-like domain, 2 short consensus repeats also called complement regulatory protein domain, transmembrane domain and short cytoplasmic tail domain. Among them, the lectin domain and the epidermal growth factor-like domain exhibit strong relationship with L-selectin function. The gene of selectin locates in 1 chromosome, exhibiting high homogeneity among different species.L-selectin consists of 324 amino acids. Its molecular weight is 74 on lymph cell's surface and 95 kDa on neutrophil's surface. L-selectin is constitutively expressed in the greater number of white blood cells , and it is the"homing receptor"of lymph cells. L-selectin and its ligand function not merely in blood and lymph system such as facilitating leukocyte rolling along the vessel wall, and also required for efficient recirculation of lymphocytes into lymph nodes. Recently, Genbacev's studies revealed that L-selectin and its ligand expressed on the surface of embryonic saccan and endometrium, respectively, in the implantation phase which contribute to the embryo-implantation.
