BackgroundGastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) is one of the most common malignant digestive diseases in northern China. A remarkable epidemiological characteristic for GCA is its very similar geographic distribution with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Linzhou and nearby counties in Henan province are the highest incidence and mortality area for SCC and GCA worldwide. SCC and GCA remain the leading cause of cancer related death in these areas. There are several differences between GCA and distal gastric cancer in respect of epidemiology, risk factors, histogenesis and clinical characteristics. However, the mechanism of gastric cardia carcinogenesis is largely unknown. It is noteworthy that the GCA patients who have the same TNM classification in hospitals have the different prognosis from high-incidence areas in Henan. Obviously, the immune response to the cancer may be one of the important factors which influence the prognosis. But the tumor immunity mechanism of GCA patients is not clear nowadays.
