Indian Ginseng (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal.) , any of several plants of Withania in the solanaceae family, can be found growing in India, the Congo, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Pakistan and other places. It has been an important herb in the Ayurvedic and indigenous medical systems for over 3000 years. Historically, the plant has been used as an aphrodisia, liver tonic, anti-inflammatory agent, astringent, and more recently to treat bronchitis, asthma, ulcers, emaciation, insomnia, and senile dementia. Clinical trials and animal research support the use of Indian ginseng for bronchitis, asthma, ulceration, debility , insomnia, agedness dementia , anxiety, cognitive and neurological disorders, and Parkinson's disease. Indian ginseng's chemopreventive properties make it a potentially useful adjunct for patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.According to the research, the primary biological activity component in Indian ginseng is withanolides.Withanolides are C-28 ergostane-type steroids possessing a steroid lactone. The obvious biological activity of this compound has already been discovered during 1960's and 1970's, specially its activity in antibacterial, inflammation, cytotoxin, cellular immunity and anti- tumor displays ,and so on.Agriculture Comprehensive Development Laboratory in our school began to cultivate and domesticate the introduced Inidan Ginseng three years ago. It is growing well in experiment field Because the introduced plant has withstood the huge change in ecological environment, the chemical composition and the content of these composition in it may change too. In order to emploder this plant resources,this article took introduced Indian Ginseng as raw material to study the chemical composition,and to separate, purify, and identify the primary withanolide by utilize the effective modern method, including separation and purification technology, the instrumental analysis identifical technology .This article provides the basic study gist for its application in health foods or drugs.This article includes the research work as follows:...
