Verbena officinalis L. is a plant widely distributed in China, which belongs to Verbenaceae family. The aerial parts of Verbena officinalis L. can be used for medicine. From the 70% ethanol extract of the the aerial parts of Verbena officinalis L., by solvent extraction, repeated silica gel column chromatography and recrystallizaton, 11 constituents were isolated. On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, these compounds were identified. They are respectively: ursolic acid lactone, 2α,3β,23-trihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic-acid, tormentic acid, euscaphic acid, l,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy-4,7,8-tri(2-butenyl)xanthone, garciniaxanthone E, 1,2,6-trihydroxy-5-methoxy-7-(3-methyl -2-butenyl)xanthone, 4,9-dihydroxy-8-methoxy-α-lapachone, gelsemiol 6'-trans-caffeoyl-1-glycoside, 9-hydroxysemperoside, and verbenalin. Among them, 1,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy-4,7,8-tri(3- methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone, garciniaxanthone E, 1,2,6-trihydroxy-5-methoxy-7-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone, 4,9-dihydroxy-8-methoxy-α-lapachone, gelsemiol 6'-trans- caffeoyl-1-glycoside, and 9-hydroxysemperoside were isolated from this genus at the first time. The pharmacological expenents showed that five compounds, that are respectively ursolic acid lactone, 1,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy- 4,7,8-tri(3-methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone, garciniaxanthone E, 4,9-dihydroxy-8-methoxy-α-lapachone,...
