Verbena officinalis L. (Verbenaceae), a perennial plant grows wild throughout all temperate regions of the world. This herb has been used as folk medicine for thousands of years for treating acute dysentery, enteritis, amenorrhea and bronchitis. Previous phytochemical studies on this plant mostly focused on triterpenes, flavonoids, iridoids and phenylethanoid glycosides. In this dissertation, we investigate the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of V. officinalis L. which was collected from Huaxi Gaopoxiang, Guizhou Province in China. Thirty-three compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of V. officinalis L. by silica gel, sephadex LH-20 and preparative HPLC and thirty compounds were identified as follows by spectral analysis: MBC-1: Tridecane MBC-2: 5α, 8α-Epidioxyergosta-6, 22-dien-3β-ol MBC-3:β-Sitosterol MBC-4: Oleanoic acid MBC-5a: 3-Eepioleanoic acid MBC-5b: 3-Epiursolic acid MBC-6: 3α, 24-Dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid MBC-7: Apigenin MBC-8: 1-Hydroxyl-tetracontane MBC-9: Ursolic acid MBC-10: Daucosterol MBC-11: Barbinervic acid MBC-12: Luteolin MBC-13: 4'-Hydroxywogonin MBC-14: Verbenalin *MBC-15: 3-Ethoxy-6-carbonyl-phlomurin MBC-16: 3, 4-Dihydroverbenal MBC-17: Martinoside MBC-18: Quercetin *MBC-19: Verbean A MBC-20: 3α, 24-Dihydroxy-olean-12-en-28-oic acid MBC-21: 4-Dodecyl-1, 2-benzenediol MBC-22: Luteolin-7-O-β-glucoside MBC-23: Hastatoside MBC-24: SaussureosideB MBC-25: 2-(3, 4-dihydroxy)-phenylethanol MBC-26: Cistanoside E MBC-27: Castanoside A MBC-28: Isoverbascoside MBC-29: ActeosideAmong them, MBC-15, 19 were new compounds, MBC-1, 2, 8, 11, 17, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27 were isolated from this plant for the first time. The thirteen compounds from this plant were evaluated for inhibitory effect on NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cell. The results showed that compound MBC-12 displayed mild inhibitory activities on NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW246.7 cells with aminoguantidine as control.
