Inula cappa DC. (Compositae) has been used as a traditional medicine in Dai nationality for the treatment of rheum, laryngotracheitis, irregular menstrual periods, abdominal pain and so on. To search for the active constituents and establish quality control for the ethnic medicine formula " Ya Jiao Ha Dun San", the chemical constituents of Inula cappa have been studied by means of modern chromatographic techniques and spectroscopic analysis (1HNMR, 13CNMR, HMBC, HMQC, EI-MS,ESI-MS). 31 compounds were isolated from the EtOH extract of the whole herb. Their structures were elucidated to be inulacappolide (1),cis-1 ,2,3,5-trans-4,6-inositol-2,3,6-tri angelate (2),1-inositol-1,2,3,5-tetra angelate(3), aurantiamide acetate(4), aurantiamide benzoate(5), friedelin(6), epifriedelanol (7), α-amyrin(8), β-amyrin(9), oleanolic acid(10), ursolic acid(11), stigmast-4-ene-3-one(12), stigmasta-4,22-dien-3-one(13), stigmast-5-ene-3β,7β-diol(14), stigmasta-5,22-dien-3β,7β-diol(15), stigmast-5-ene-3β,7α-diol(16), stigmasta-5,22-dien-3β,7α-diol(17), stigmasterol (18), 7-oxo-β-sitosterol(19),β-sitosterol(20), β-daucosterol(21), physcion(22), scopoletin(23), vanillin(24), coniferyl aldehyde(25), syringaldehyde (26), syringic acid (27), luteolin(28), apigenin(29), dotriacontanic acid(30), azelaic acid(31), respectively. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 were new, and compounds4-6, 8-9, 11-19, 22-27,30-31 were isolated from this genus for the first time.
