Several reports have documented a direct involvement of the overexpression of matrix metallopreinases (MMPs) and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF- β1) in the pathologenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) and development and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).In the study, the authors investigated expression of MMPs TIMP-2 and TGF-pl in OLP and OSCC from OLP in order to investigate the relationship between the expression of MMPs, TIMP-2, TGF- β1 and carcinogenesis of OLP.Immunohistochemistry analysis for MMP-2, MMP-9, MT1 -MMP were performed in 11 normal oral mucosa (NOM) , 15 non-atrophic OLP ,12 atrophic OLP and 15 OSCC from OLP.The expression of MMPs consequently increased from NOM to non-atrophic OLP, progressing to atrophic OLP and OSCC from OLP. The over expression of MMP-2, MMP-9 and MT1-MMP (mainly weak and moderate stain) were identified in non-atrophic OLP; the...
