Objectives Peptic ulcer (PU) is one of the commonest chronic diseases in the world, and seriously impacts human health, labor force and economic status. In recent years, the short-term therapeutic effectiveness of PU has already improved obviously, but the features of recurrence and predisposing to concurrent bleeding remain. How to prevent the onsets of PU and its complications is still a problem to be studied. The meteorological factors are often the onset causes in some human diseases. Investigations of the relationship between meteorology and human diseases are important in precaution and prevention of disease onsets. Some surveys about the relationship between the onset of PU and meteorology have been reported, and the majority considered them related, but with evident variances among their consequences, and the minority thought them unrelated. The influences of meteorological factors on the onset of PU in urban area of Nanchang have not been reported so far. In order to realize the relations and provide new evidences for the precaution and treatment of PU in urban area of Nanchang, a retrospective study on the relationships between the onsets of the PU and its complications and meteorology was performed in the in-patients which were residents of Nanchang city.Methods The medical record documents were reviewed of patients with PU with or without bleeding, perforation or pyloric obstruction residing in Nanchang urban area and hospitalizing in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University during 1999-2003, and 27 items of data were collected, which including general data, onset causes, medical history, examination results and managements.
