Objective and Background At present, though OPCAB(Off pump coronary artery bypass) has been widely applied to patients all over world, it remained controversial, regarding the potential benefits of this technique. The aim of study was to evaluate the clinical experience of OPCAB and compare the results with conventional procedures, by reviewing the data of patients who underwent bypass procedures between 1997 to 2004 in Sir Run Run Shaw hospital.Method between 1997 and 2004, 32 patients underwent OPCAB, they were retrospectively compared with 78 patients receiving conventional procedures during the same period. Results In OPCAB group, average length of ICU stay 2 days, average length of postoperative hospital stay 8 days, average postoperative ventilation time 5 hours. There were neither in hospital mortalities, nor serious complications as postoperative renal insufficiency or renal failure, postoperative bleeding, low output syndrome etc. There are 2 patients with complications, one as supraventricular tachycardia, the other as pleura effusion. Both resolved after proper treatments. Though these results prefer OPCAB, no statistic significance has been dominated. Statistic significance does have been found in terms of requirements of blood transfusions, length of ICU stay, length of postoperative hospital stay, postoperative ventilation time. Conclusion OPCAB is a safe and effective procedure. In proper selected patients, the early results are satisfactory. The postoperative complication rate is relatively lower in OPCAB group.
