Objective: To investigate the safety and the effects on cervical microenvironment in infertility women with chronic cervicitis treated by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).Methods: Women treated in Infertility Clinic of Women' s Hospital of Zhejiang University were assessed. These women met following criteria: (1). The women had moderate or severe cervical erosion, aged from 25 to 34 , with normal menstrual cycles. Ultrasound showed they had normal ovulation (2). Their husbands had normal motility and number of sperm; The women received the treatment with high-intensity focused ultrasound, with a focal depth range of 4-6 mm, a resonant frequency of 9-11 MHz, and an output power 3. 5W. The follow-up time was three months. The changes of cervical mucus character and the results of postcoital test were investigated. The clinical effects on cervical erosion and complications were also evaluated. Results: A total of 10 women were recruited in this investigation. Six women had severe cervical erosion and 4 had moderate cervical erosion . In severe cervical erosion cases , two were cured, two were improved significantly (more than 50% reduction of erosion area) and 2 wereimproved (less than 50% reduction of erosion area). In the moderate cervical erosion cases, 2 were cured, 2 were improved significantly. After the treatment, the median of cervical mucus score during LH peak were increased from 11 to 13 (P<0. 05) . Postcoital test showed that the median of highly motile sperm(grade III and grade II) five high-power field were increased from 23 to 52 (P<0. 05) . No serious side effects were observed . Conclusions: The high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy can help to improve the cervical microenvironment for infertility women with moderate or severe cervical erosion without serious side effects.
