Objective: To investigate the clinical effectiveness and individual side effects of focused ultrasound therapy on chronic cervicitis. Methods: From Jan. 2005 to Dec 2006, a total of 333 patients with the diagnosis of chronic cervicitis, made on the basis of pap smear and colposcopy examination were taken. Among them, 155 patients were treated with focused ultrasound and 178 patients with electrocoagulation. Patients were classified on the basis of degree of cervical erosion, pathological type and the course of disease. All the patients were followed up at 3 months after treatment. The changes in clinical symptoms and signs before and after treatment were recorded and compared. Results: Of the focused ultrasound group, 102 cases (65.81%) had cured, 45cases (29.03%) had obvious improvement, and 8 cases (5.16 %) had improvement. Thus, the effectiveness of treatment was 100%. The cure rate dependent upon the area and type of cervical erosion (P<0.05). Of the electrocoagulation group, 128 cases (71.91%) had cured, 43cases (24.16%) had obvious improvement, and 7 cases (3.93%) had improvement. Thus, the effectiveness of treatment was 100%. The cure rate was dependent upon the area and type of cervical erosion (P<0.05). Though no significant difference on the clinical effect was observed between the two treatment groups(P >0.05), the side effects such as vaginal discharge and hemorrhage were significantly higher in the electrocoagulation group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Chronic cervicitis can be treated by focused ultrasound therapy effectively and safely with rare complications. The focused ultrasound therapy will be an important therapeutic option in treating chronic cervicitis, specially in married non-pregnant women.
