The whole plant of Geum japonicum Thunb.,a perennial herb and the flowering plant of the Rosaceae family, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese folk medicine as diuretics and astringents. Previous phytochemical investigations on Geum japonicum have revealed the occurrence of triterpenoids and tannins. Pharmacological experiments indicate that this plant has a strong anti-HIV-1 and anti-HSV-1 activity. In order to search the active natural products,we began to study the chemical constituents from G. japonicum. By column chromatography, including Silica gel , Toyopearl HW-40 and preparative HPLC , twenty-four compounds were isolated from the P.E or EtOAc extract of G. japonicum, and fifteen known compounds were identified by means of 1H-NMR,13C-NMR and DEPT spectra. Their structures were elucidated as Swinhoeic acid (1),goreishic acid (2),1β,2α,19α-trihydroxy-3-oxo-12-ursen-28-oic acid (3),2α,19α-dihydroxy-3-oxo-12- ursen-28-oic acid (4),3β-o-trans-ferulyl-2α,19α-dihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (5) ,euscaphic acid (6),Pomolic acid (7), Corosolic acid (8),Ursolic acid (9),maslinic acid (10),tormic acid (11),2α,3β,19α,23-tetrahydroxy-12-ursen-28-oic acid (12),arjunolic acid (13),β-sitosterol (14),daucosterol (15). Eight compounds including 1-3,5,7,13-15 were isolated from this plant for the first time.
