Arisaema amurense Maxim., belonging to the Araceae, grows in the hillside, edge of the forest, brush-hood, etc. It distributes in China,Korea and Russia widely, especially in the Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning province of China. It is reported that Arisaema amurense Maxim. is a poisonous Chinese traditional and herbal drug. As an effective Chinese traditional and herbal drug, it is used to treat many diseases, such as cough with chronic phlegm, vertigo, cataptosis, epilepsia, tetanus, etc. Although the availability of Arisaema amurense Maxim. is confirmed by the evidences of its curative effect for a long time, its toxicity still restricts its clinic uses.We have used the fresh tuber of Arisaema amurense Maxim. as material, and focused on several aspects which are shown below:First, we reviewed the development in chemical constituents, pharmacological action, clinical application of the plants of Arisaema and Pinellia. Chemical constituents of the plants of Arisaema and Pinellia include alkaloid, glycoside, sterol, fatty acid, amino acids, lectin, carbohydrate, etc. Modern pharmacological investigation indicated that they have many important biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, sedation, anti-convulsion, anti- arrhythmia, etc. Then, the chemical constituents of the tubers of Arisaema amurense Maxim. were investigated. Four compounds were isolated from the alcohol extract by using macroporous resin, SG column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by means of physical and chemical properties, modern spectroscopic analysis technique: 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, etc, and comparison with the data what were reported. They are schaftoside, isoschaftoside, sucrose, turanose. This is the first report of turanose in Arisaema genus.
