Objective: To explore effect of cranial sutures acupuncture combined with drugs on serumsuperoxide dismutase(SOD) and malonaldehyde (MDA) and the improvement of neuralfunction rehabilitation in the patients of phlegm syndrome of acute cerebral infarction (CI).Method: According to the clinical diagnostic criterion of the cerebrovascular disease in thefourth national academic discussion of cerebrovascular disease in Chengdu and the clinicaldialectical criterion of stroke in the sixth national academic discussion of encephalopathy in1994. Chosing 40 patients of phlegm syndrome of acute CI ,whose ages are at 45~75 yearsold, and then they are divided into two groups at random. 20 cases were treated withmedication, such as modulation arteriotony, prophylaxis hydrocephalus, improve braincirculation, etc(Group A). Another 20 cases were treated with cranial sutures acupuncturecombined with medication(Group B),Group B is the same medication as Group A. After onecourse of treatment, to observe and compare the amount of serum SOD and MDA and thescores in clinical neural function and signs-symptoms of two groups of patients. Results: (1) Compared with normal level, serum SOD activity decreased, MDA levelsincreased in patients of phlegm syndrome of acute CI;(2) In the routine medication group(Group A), the significant decrease of the scores in clinicalneural function (P<0.05) was observed, and the scores of clinical neural function in cranical sutures acupuncture group(Group B) decreases significantly, too (P<0.01) ,and lower than theroutine medication group(Group A). In Group A, the significant decrease of the scores insigns-symptoms (P<0.05) was observed, and the scores of signs-symptoms in Group Bdecreases significantly, too (P<0.01) ,and lower than Group A.(3) There was a significant increase of serum SOD activity in both Group A and Group B(P<0.05, P<0.01) ,but serum SOD activity in Group B changed much more significantly thanthat in Group A (P<0.05) .There was a significant decrease of serum MDA levels in bothGroup A and Group B (P<0.05, P<0.01) ,but serum MDA levels in Group B changed muchmore significantly than that in Group A (P<0.05).(4) The scores of clinical neural function and signs-symptoms are correlated with serum SODactivity negatively and MDA levels positively before and after the treatment. Conclusions: The metabolic disorder of free radical exists in the patients of acute CI,reflecting on the decrease of serum SOD activity and the increase of serum MDA levels; Thetherapeutic effect of the cranial sutures acupuncture combined with medication group issuperior to that of the medication group. Serum SOD activity ascends and MDA levelsdecreases because of the cranial sutures acupuncture, improving clinical neural function andalleviating signs-symptoms. The mechanism of cranial sutures acupuncture is to improveSOD activity to deep remove free radicals and reduce serum MDA levels, alleviatingreperfusion injury after cerebral infarction.
