OBJECTIVE: Through the study of brachial ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in type 2 diabetic patients, to confirm it was faster than that in the healthy, and type 2 diabetic patients arteries stress was more significantly decreased than that in the healthy. To study the association between baPWV and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), blood pressure and age in type 2 diabetes, investigate the influential factors of baPWV of type 2 diabetes and explore the relationship between the syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) of type 2 diabetes and baPWV. It will provide some reliable information of the traditional Chinese medicine, western medicine and clinical therapy on subclinical pathological changes of blood vessel in type 2 diabetes.MATERIALS AND MATHODS: According to ADA diagnostic criteria of drawing off in 1997 and referencing New Medicine Clinical Research Guideline of Traditional Chinese Medicine Medicine published in 2002, the Western medicine diagnostic criteria and the diagnostic criteria of syndrome differentiation of TCM of type 2 diabetes were instituted. A total of 131 type 2 diabetic patients (77 men, 54 women), aged 61.27±9.04 years. After the patients were brought into the research team, baPWV, height, weight, blood pressure and FPG were measured. The arteriosclerosis diagnostic device (VS-1000,Japan) was used to measure baPWV and systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse pressure (PP).RESULTS:1. The baPWV of type 2 diabetic patients was found to be obviously quicker than that in the healthy, indicate arteries stress in type 2 diabetic patients was more obviously decrease than that in the healthy.2. BaPWV, PP and FPG in type 2 diabetes with hypertension (DH) groups were obvious higher than that in type 2 diabetes with normotension (DNT) groups (P<0.05, respectively).3. BaPWV was positively correlated with age, FPG, SBP and PP (P<0.01, respectively). There was no association between baPWV and DBP.4. The relation between the syndrome differentiation of TCM of type 2 diabetes and baPWV was statistically different in EXTREME HEAT WITH YIN ASTHENIA , DAMPNESS-HEAT RETENTION SPLEEN and QI-YIN DEFICIENCY (P<0.05). BaPWV of DAMPNESS-HEAT RETENTION SPLEEN and QI-YIN DEFICIENCY were obviously higher than that in EXTREME HEAT WITH YIN ASTHENIA (P<0.05, respectively).CONCLUSIONS:The artery stress in type 2 diabetic patients was impaired compared with the health. BaPWV in DH groups was obviously higher than that in DNT groups. And, it implied that age, SBP, DBP and PP were the influential factors of baPWV, and they influenced baPWV together. They were common risk factors of atherosclerosis.Artery stress of DAMPNESS-HEAT RETENTION SPLEEN and QI-YIN DEFICIENCY more obviously subside than EXTREME HEAT WITH YIN ASTHENIA in this study.
