Objectives:This dissertation aims to provide evidence for the rational applications of Florida probes through comparison of clinical applications between conventional periodontal probes (Hu-Friedy probes)and Florida probes. Methods:Experiment one:twenty patients' teeth which need to be removed are due to periodontitis are selected. After marking ruts were made by diamond bur needles on the surface of six sites for the above each tooth, the distance between each rut and pouch bottoms was respectively measured by means of using the two different probes. Then the patients' teeth were pulled out and after their being dehydrated, periodontal fibers attached unto the teeth surface are dyed with 0.1%mercuric bromphenol blue. Finally, the distance between the rut bottom and the attachment level was determined and the results by using two different probes were compared.Experiment two:45 teeth from 15 patients with periodontitis were chosen and 270 teeth sites were decided. An examiner separately measured PD twice for each probe before and after initial periodontal treatments. Then comparison of PD repetitions between the two different probes before and after the treatments was performed respectively. Moreover,PD repetitions with the same probe before and after the treatments were also conducted while the comfort by visual analog scales was scored.Results:1.As to the comparison of accuracy, the correlation between probe penetration measurement(PPM)by two probes and the microscopically assessed attachment level (MAL)was strong. In addition, there was an obvious significance(P=0.032)between PPM and MAL by using conventional periodontal probes. And the PPM measured by conventional periodontal probes was larger than MAL,indicating the pinpoint ends by conventional periodontal probes stopping at the root of periodontal pouch. Finally, there existed no significance(P=0.703)between the PPM and MAL by conventional periodontal probes.2.As for the comparison of reproducibility and comfort, the PD repetitions with the two probes were quite good before and after the initial periodontal treatments(P>0.05,with coefficient from 0.80 to 0.89).Apart from this, the repetitions by two different probes were close before the treatments, whereas the repetition by Florida probes was better than that by conventional probes after the treatments(P<0.05).Besides,the comfort from Florida probes was superior to that from conventional probes. Conclusions:Based on the results of this study, the clinical accuracy, reproducibility and comfort by Florida probes are better than those by conventional periodontal probes when both two probes are applied in clinical treatment. From the comparison between the treatments using two probes,Florida probes are superior to conventional periodontal probes, especially with the obvious reproducibility by Florida probes superior to that by conventional periodontal probes after the periodontal treatments. In a word,Florida probes could be reliably applied in clinical periodontal research.
