Objectlve: To study the prevalence and existing problems of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and provide basis for making scientific program..Method: Thirty sampling units were selected by the "probability proportionate to size" method. One school was randomly chosen in each sampling unit, 40 children aged 8-10 years were randomly sampled in each school. Thyroid examination by palpation and ultrasound were conducted by provincial professional specialists and was graded according to the criteria of the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, and the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders. Intelligence quotient values were measured by the Combined Raven's Test in China (CRT-C2). A urine sample was collected from participants during interview, they were analyzed for iodine content by means of manual acid digestion and spectrophotometric detection of iodine by ceric ammonium reduction in the Sandell-Kolthof reaction. The iodine content of iodated salt samples was measured using iodometry titration. We carried on the healthy education inquisition to the students of the grade five and housewives. The database was set up using Epi Info 2002. All the data was input and validated by the validate program of Epi Info 2002, and then corrected. All data were analyed using SPSS11.0 for Windows with the statistic methods of T-test, F-test,χ2-test, nonoparametric test, ect. Results: The median of iodized salt was 30.9mg/kg, the percent of the qualified iodized salt was 98.1%,the coverage rates of iodized salt was 98.6%, the consuming rates of qualified iodized salt was 96.7 %, the percent of non-iodized salt was 1.4%, variation coefficient of iodized salt was 24.5%.The goiter rate by palpation was 12.2%, the goiter rate by ultrasonic method was 6.1%. The median of the urinary iodine in pupils was 176.1ug/L, and the proportions of students whose urinary iodine lower than 20ug/L and 100ug/L were 3.6% and 20.7% , respectively; The mean of IQ in 8-10 years-old school children was 118.9, the proportion of low intelligence was 1.6%. There was difference among different age groups and different regions, analysis for frequency also showed proportion of high IQ children was larger; The average scores of healthy education of the students of the grade five and housewives were 53.2 and 90.7, respectively, the passing rate for IDD knowledge among the students of the grade five and housewives were 37.5%and 100%, respectively, the average scores of housewives were over 90 in 23 units, the average scores of school students were over 60 in 10 units. Conclusions: In Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, iodine nutrition of inhabitants is good, urinary iodine and iodized salt reach the national standard of eliminating IDD, the iodine level in the school children is ideal, however, the areas of state of severe illness, lower edible rate and non-iodized salt still existed. The awareness of healthy education on IDD control is not powerful enough, and healthy education should be enhanced.
