Object: To understand the dynamic change trends of iodine deficiency disorders in Chongqing city, to evaluate objectively the effect of relative intervention measures and so as to provide scientific bases for emending the strategy for its prevention and control. Methods: Universal salt iodization was conducted in Chongqing from 1997 to 2005.The amount of iodine in the salt sampled from residential houses by population proportion probability sampling (pps) was tested. The thyroid volume of children aged 8~10 years was examined by B-ultrasound and palpation. The urinary iodine and IQ were examined too. Results: From 1997 to 2005, coverage rate of iodine salt was 90.08%~98.17% ,and the rate of using qualified iodine salt ranged 83.00%~92.37%, the thyroid total goiter rate has decreased from 18.33% to 10.45% by palpation, from 17.42% to 9.90% by B-ultrasound; The median of urinary iodine from 238.75μg/L to 321.40μg/L; The IQ was improved from 103.23(2002) to 106.32(2005) remarkable, especially for the children at the age of 8 years old who were born after the universal salt iodization. Conclusions: The effect of universal salt iodization preventing iodine deficiency disorders over 8 years in Chongqing was remarkable.
