Sleep is an essential process for life and an important link for recovering vigour, and integrating and consolidating memory, it is an indispensable component of the healthy. Good sleep can eliminate tiredness and make people refreshed. However, along with the rapid rhythm of modern social living, the exaggeration of the work pressure. Insomnia has been a common disease and the cause of some other diseases. so more and more people have drawn attention to the problem of sleeping quality.There is unique recognition on sleep and insomnia in the Traditional Chinese medicine. According to the theory of differentiation in Traditional Chinese Medicine, insomnia is mainly treated with two kinds of Chinese prescriptions, tranquilizing prescription with heavy herbs and supplementing prescription. Through the clinical practice for several thousand years, it have been proved that compound prescriptions have unique curative effect on improving sleeping and enhancing sleep quality.Adopting the experimental method of PSG and insomnia rat model induced by electric stimulation, we investigated that effect of the Tianwangbuxin Pill and its decoction at middle dose on the sleeping phase of insomnia rats and compared the two experimental results by analysis of EEG. Moreover, we demonstrated that Tianwangbuxin Pill and Cizhu Pill of high, middle and low doses influenced sleeping state in insomnia rats and compared the results between them.The results show that the Tianwangbuxin Pill and its decoction both can obviously decrease the duration of W and increase TST of rat, and that Tianwangbuxin Pill can develop sleeping structure to normal level. Based on above experimental results, the effects of Tianwangbuxin Pill and Cizhu Pill of various doses on sleeping states are compared with each other. All three doses of Tianwangbuxin Pill and Cizhu Pill can decrease waking time and increase total sleeping time.Tianwangbuxin Pill at low dose increase SWS2. Further, our present study show that Tianwangbuxin Pill of middle and high dose increase SWS2 and REMS significantly; SWS2 is increased more obviously at middle dose, but REMS at high dose. Cizhu Pill increase SWS2 at low dose, augment SWS2 and REMS at middle dose, and increase SWS1,SWS2 at high dose.In conclusion, at low dose, Tianwanbuxin Pill surpass Cizhu Pill in effect on W and TST. At middle dose, both prescriptions facilitate SWS2 and REMS, but Tianwangbuxin Pill increase SWS2 more obviously. At high dose, the two prescriptions decrease W but increase TST and SWS2; Cizhu Pill surpass Tianwanbuxin Pill; Cizhu Pill has a significant effect on SWS1. Tianwanbuxin Pill has advantage on REMS compared to Cizhu Pill.
