Objective To investigate the relationship between polymorphism of the estrogen receptora(ESRa)gene and osteoporosis in Shandong peninsula Han people postmenopausal women. Methods In 106 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, aged 50~86 years(average 68 years)and 82 postmenopausal women without osteoporosis, aged 47~77 years(average 56 years), bone mineral density(BMD) was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. XbaⅠand PvuⅡrestriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of ESRawere analysed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The relationship between polymorphism of the estrogen receptor a gene and osteoporosis was evaluated. The RFLP was represented as Xx (XbaⅠ) and Pp (PvuⅡ). Results Using x~2 analysis, we concluded that there was no difference in the distribution of genotype and allele frequency between osteoporosis group and control group (P>0.05). There was no statistical significance among "Xx,xx,XX" genotype (P>0.05) and no statistical significance between "x" and "X" allelic genes(P>0.05). There was no statistical significance among "Pp,pp,PP" genotype (P>0.05) and no statistical significance between "p" and "P" allelic genes (P>0.05). Conclusion The results suggested that there is no association between ESRagene XbaⅠ,PvuⅡRFLP and osteoporosis in Shandong peninsula postmenopausal women.
