Expression Of S100A4 Protein In Human Thyroid Carcinomas And Its Clinical Significance

Objective To study the significance and expression of S100A4 protein in human thyroid gland carcinomas.Methods Immunohistochemistry method (SP) was used to examine the expression of S100A4 protein in 56 cases with malignant thyroid gland carcinoma (Thyroid Papillary cancer 30 cases,Thyroid Follicular cancer cases 8 cases Thyroid Anaplastic cancer cases 3 cases and Thyroid Medullary cancer 12 cases) and 45 cases with benign thyroid gland tumors(Thyroid adenoma 15 cases, nodule goiter 15 cases and primarily hyperthyroidism 15 cases), 13 cases with normal thyroid gland tissues.Results The positive expression rates of S100A4 were 83.9% (47/56)in thyroid gland carcinoma(The intensity of S100A4 protein(+): 25cases, (++): 12cases, (+++)10cases). The positive expression rates of S100A4 were 11.1%(5/45) in benign thyroid gland tumors (The intensity of S100A4 protein expression (+): 5cases). There was no expression in normal thyroid gland tissues. There were significant differences between thyroid gland carcinoma and benign group,normal thyroid gland tissues (P＜0.01). The positive expression rates of S100A4 were77.8% (28/36) in clinic stageⅠ—Ⅱ(The intensity of S100A4 protein expression (+): 22 cases, (++): 4 cases, (+++)2 cases). The positive expressi on n rates of S100A4 were 95.0% (19/20) in clinic stageⅢ—Ⅳ(The intensity of S100A4 protein expression (+): 3 cases, (++): 8 cases, (+++)8 cases), There were significant differences between clinic stageⅠ—Ⅱand clinic stageⅢ—Ⅳ(P＜0.01). The positive expression rates of S100A4 were 100% (16/16) in the thyroid malignant carcinoma with lymph node metastasis(The intensity of S100A4 protein expression(++): 8 cases, (+++)8 cases). The positive expression rates of S 100A4 were77.5 % (31/40) in the thyroid malignant carcinoma with lymph node metastasis(The intensity of S100A4 protein expression (+): 24 cases, (++): 2 cases, (+++)2 cases). There were significant differences between them (P＜0.01) The expression of S100A4 was not positively correlated with the differentiation of tumor (P＞0.05). Conclusion The abnormal expression of S100A4 protein plays an important role in the origin and development of thyroid cancer and it can promote the thyroid tumor cells malignant multiplication and transportation. The expression of S100A4 protein can be used as the checkpoint and prognosis evaluation of thyroid cancer. S100A4 protein has practical meaning in clinic.
