Objective: To investigate the proportion of different types of glaucoma, distribution of genders , ages and nationalities, as well as the changes, of inpatients with glaucoma, especially primary glaucoma, in the department of Ophthalmology. Methods: 779 cases in our Department of Ophthalmology from January 2002 to December 2006 were studied. Based on the classification of discharge diagnosis, the distributions of ages, genders and nationalities in groups of patients were analyzed, as well as the constitutive proportions of each kind of glaucoma. The data were then compared between two periods (2002 and 2006).Results: 64.42% of the case were primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), while 5.18%, 29.62% and 0.78% of them were primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma respectively. During the period 2002, PACG constituted 94.55% of all primary glaucoma, while it changed to 91.09% during 2006. Secondary glaucoma (SG) constituted 12% in 2002, while 36.65% in 2006(P<0.05). Congenital glaucoma (CG) had no significant change during these 5 periods. The median ages of PACG were 62.05 years old, while POAG were 47.78 years old. Conclusions: Compared with the constitutive portions of hospitalized patients with glaucoma in other hospitals, the results were not all the same in our Department of Ophthalmology. Primary glaucoma was also the main part, with PACG constituting the greater part. However, POAG still constituted the small part.
