Part IObjective:To study the clinical profile and distribution of various subtypes of hospitalized pediatric glaucoma in Shanghai EENT Hospital in Eastern area of China. Methods:We reviewed the charts of hospitalized pediatric patients from birth to18years old, with a discharge diagnosis of glaucoma in Shanghai EENT Hospital, from2003to2010. We evaluated the demographic characteristics and the proportion of different glaucoma subtypes.Results:734pediatric patients with a discharge diagnosis of glaucoma were collected in this study. Except one American child and one African child,732children are Chinese children and came from24provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. Most of them came from the Eastern area of China (n=683,93.05%). Boys were more common in all subtypes and at all ages, with a total ratio of boys to girls of2.14:1. Congenital glaucoma was the most common subtype, accounting for47.55%in all patients and accounting for83.78%in children under1years of age. The median presenting age of congenital glaucoma patients was under1year old. Patients with primary juvenile glaucoma were the second most common group (n=125,17.03%), and presented at older age (the median presenting age was13years). Traumatic glaucoma were the third most common subtype (n=81,11.03%).Conclusions:Congenital glaucoma is the most prevalent glaucoma subtype in hospitalized pediatric patients in Shanghai EENT Hospital. Primary junvenile glaucoma, traumatic glaucoma and aphakia glaucoma also constitute large proportions of hospitalized pediatric glaucoma in Shanghai EENT Hospital. Part â…¡Objective:To study the clinical profile of hospitalized pediatric glaucoma after ocular trauma in Shanghai EENT Hospital in Eastern area of China. Methods:We reviewed the charts of hospitalized traumatic patients from birth to18years old, with a discharge diagnosis of glaucoma in Shanghai EENT Hospital, from2003to2011. We evaluated the demographic characteristics and the proportion of gender, age and etiology.Results:91pediatric patients with a discharge diagnosis of glaucoma were collected in this study,83patients received operation, the operation rate was91.02%. Injuries necessitating admission occurred most frequently indoor (68.8%),66.7%at home,17.8%in school or kindergarten;25.3%were self-injure,74.7%were injured by another persons. Boys were more common at all ages, with a total ratio of boys to girls of6.58:1. Penetrating injury was more common, accounted for53.8%, blunt trauma accounted for46.2%; The sharp instrument injury with metal, blast injury and wooden injury were the three major causes, the toy also made a large proportion. The most common operation type in Shanghai ENT Hospital was valve implantation, and the postoperative visual acuity was unsatisfying. The median presenting age of traumatic glaucoma patients was10years.Conclusions:Traumatic glaucoma is the important prevalent glaucoma subtype in hospitalized pediatric patients in Shanghai EENT Hospital. The prevention and treatment of traumatic glaucoma can reduce the incidence of visual damage.
